Burgess Buchanan ACNP-C
Burgess was born and raised in Arizona and graduated from Grand Canyon University with her Bachelors degree in Nursing and later completed the Adult and Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program with her Masters in Science of Nursing. Driven by an early passion for medicine, Burgess first entered the medical field at just 14 years of age as a volunteer at a hospital near her home. After spending a summer in Tucson, where her family member underwent a lifesaving heart surgery, she soon realized her desire to care for critically ill patients . She went on to work three years in the Trauma ICU as a Registered Nurse. When Burgess completed her Masters degree, she continued her work in the ICU as a Nurse Practitioner. Her focus was Neurocritical Care, Strokes and Neurosurgery where she worked to diagnose and treat patients with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, CNS tumors, and those undergoing emergent or elective surgical procedures. One of her most memorable experiences in medicine was volunteering with her church medical mission in Malawi, Africa where her team assessed and treated hundreds of women with children battling malnutrition, environmental exposures and illness in the village population up clinics. Burgess has said the people of Malawi, having what we as Americans viewed as so little, were the happiest people she had ever met. In her years of experience in conventional medicine, Burgess has seen the devastations of disease and illness which could have been otherwise prevented. She made the decision to go back to school to obtain her certification in Functional Medicine with IFM, with a focus of Women’s Health. Burgess understands Functional Medicine is crucial to true healing and whole body optimization. Even more imperative is having a foundation on the Lord which is why her practice approaches patient work-up and treatment with a faith based model.

Why do I implement a faith based model with Origo Functional Medicine? I spent decades trying to do things on my own and continued to fall short, until I surrendered to the Lord. I was convinced I could read the self help books, listen to all the podcasts and do enough research to heal my brain, heart and body. I was so sorely mistaken. I saw how once I surrendered, the Lord brought me answers through people who knew far more than I did, he brought me financial opportunities to pay for necessary tests and procedures, he brought me community of support, he allowed me to pursue additional certification to help other women who much like me were on the hamster wheel of doctor visits, medical bills, unanswered questions, and exhaustion. Now don’t let just my story convince you… working in a level one trauma center, I saw countless miracles. I personally looked at cases and thought, “I don’t see how they can recover from this”. I would walk into ICU rooms for rounds to see families praying over their loved one on the ventilator, singing praise and worship amidst their tragedy. I saw patients wake up and go on to live quality lives who weren't even expected to survive. Although this wasn’t always the case, it was enough for me to see that whatever we think we can do on our own, the Lord can do 1000 fold.
